Seven shades across two lines. Here's how to land on the right one the first time.

Start lighter. Always.

Twenty years behind the chair taught us this one. Between two shades? Go lighter — you can always reapply to go darker. BRUTUS builds, so leave it on longer or go again the next day and you'll land exactly where you want it. That's the whole point of a powder you control.

Pick your shade

If you're any shade of blonde, do not start with an Original brown. It will go darker than you expect. Sandy Blonde and Copper Blonde exist for exactly this reason.

The two lines work differently

BRUTUS Original — water-activated powder for medium to dark hair. The clock controls the result: 10 minutes blends grey and leaves some through, 30 minutes covers it fully. First time, start at 10 and work up.

How Naturals actually behaves

This is the part people get wrong, so read it before you buy.

1. It builds. No synthetic dyes means pigment deposits in layers. Your first application will blend grey subtly, not cover it. That is correct behaviour. Repeat the process — usually two or three applications — until you hit the coverage you want. After that you're just maintaining new growth.

2. Saturate. Every strand, root to tip, thick paste. Patchy results come from patchy application.

3. Thirty minutes minimum. Forty-five for stubborn or resistant hair.

4. Do it at night. Color takes several hours to finish depositing and reaches full result at 24 hours. Rinse in the evening, sleep on it, judge it in the morning. Do not reapply before then — that's how people overshoot.

5. Light Ash Brown may look faintly green right after rinsing. That's indigo oxidising, and it's normal. It settles into a cool ash brown overnight. Don't panic and don't strip it.

Before you start

• Patch test 48 hours ahead. Plant-based does not mean risk-free. This applies to both lines.
• Use a barrier. Petroleum jelly along the hairline, ears, and neck. Naturals stains less than Original, but both can stain skin.
• Wear the gloves.
• Beard and scalp take color differently. Coarse or resistant beard hair usually needs the full 45 minutes even when your scalp doesn't.
• Never use on eyelashes or eyebrows.
